New technologies bring way to new possibilities of spreading knowledge

One non profit organization has recently found an innovative way of bring hundreds of books to school children in developing countries all over the world!

Worldreader.org has been testing out a campaign that would provide E-readers (Kindle like device) that would act as a library of infinite proportions for both teachers and students in developing countries. The non-profit has been conducting pilot studies in six different schools in Ghana. This is break through stuff because one of the largest limiting factors in sending books is the price of shipping and difficulty of delivery in the country.

However, Worldreader.org would like to see that students of all ages in developing countries have access to the infinite books, along with periodicals and magazine publishings too. It is my belief that with enough companies support that Worldreader.org could exponentially increase the amount of lives we can all change.

marinate on it.

“out of sight, out of mind, out of conversation”

Today’s post was inspired by a webinar I participated in this morning. The title of this particular presentation was “The Rise of the Social Consumer” and the speaker was Brian Solls. A good point was made that in this ever expanding new frontier we call social media, it becomes important for businesses to move beyond using social media as merely for marketing and PR purposes. Its about socializing the entire business in order to make a more social and relevant business. This includes human resources departments, customer service, and so on. With over 200-300 million Facebook users accessing their accounts with mobile devices alone, it is in the best interest of any company to find new and innovative ways of creating valuable content to share with their consumers. Brian went on to say “this is your time to lead not follow.” It isn’t about one good idea anymore. It is necessary for creatives and marketers alike to constantly provide new and interesting content through their social media vehicles.

Who do we surround ourselves with on these social media sites, and what is the significance? I decided to take a deeper look at all the nodes I am connected with and the other forms of social content I choose to be exposed to day-to-day. I hoped to discover some form of a connection. I typically check Facebook once or twice a day. Why do this? It is simple really..  I want the ability to stay in touch with friends and family from my hometown, and college friends both at ECU and all over the country. Most of these friends participate and share content just over Facebook. However, other than with my current Social Media course, my only other exposure to blogging was when I followed a good friend who spent time in Peru. This makes a good point that younger social media users don’t typically stray farther than a Facebook or Twitter account. That being said, the more nodes that have access to your page will greater affect your consciousness of what you make available for them to see. For instance if an individual (no gender in specific..) has 1,700 Facebook friends, that individual may be more likely to filter out who can see pictures from their fall break. I have a number of friends who have deleted their accounts and started over only adding people they actually want to stay in touch with (thus share there personal digital life with).

city life

Over the summer I found myself thrown into a completely different and new element. I spent three months living and working in downtown Washington DC. This was a culture shock from everything I have ever been used too, considering I grew up in a typical suburban town in North Carolina. Upon arriving I quickly found out that the internship that originally brought me up here was not going to materialize. So the next logical step in my journey was to find a job that could help me sustain a functional lifestyle in my new concrete surroundings. Over the next week I was making phone calls which eventually got me an interview that lead to a server position at Hudson Restaurant and Lounge. This was a classy little fine dinning establishment not far from Dupont Circle. Keep in mind I have never worked in the restaurant industry in my life. Now do they know that? Of course not. My plan was to never let them find that out while learning on the run. Over the next month in a half I was pouring wine for World Bank employees and even politicians and their constituents. This was certainly a great experience but I was still looking for an internship that would give me valuable knowledge that would be marketable for my career. I was networking with anyone that would listen and some that wouldn’t. This took a little over a week, but the next thing I know I am interviewing with the owner of a fitness company where I spent the rest of my summer learning the inner workings of a successful business model. Even better I only had to walk two blocks to get there. I did everything from billings, general administrative work, to even painting the walls of their office building. The moral of my story is: you control your own destiny, do something about it!
